The global watch industry has annual sales of $15 billion, and metal powder injection molding has been closely involved in the production of many new watches. Powder injection molded watchbands, buckles, and cases are produced worldwide.
Initially, due to market saturation and the reduced cost of traditional forging processes in the watch industry, the rapid growth rate of metal powder injection molded parts slowed. However, with the popularization of smart wearables and the increasing complexity of watch structures, the application of powder injection molding in watch parts has rapidly increased again. Figure 2 shows a bezel used in a smart wearable device.
The successful application of metal powder injection molding technology in the watch industry is mainly due to its suitability for mass production. MIM processes typically have a production cycle of 5-7 days, allowing for continuous supply after one cycle. Daily output can range from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of units, depending on demand. Furthermore, because MIM products are formed using a mold similar to an injection mold, it offers a high degree of freedom in geometric design. Essentially, any product that can be formed by an injection mold can be manufactured using the MIM process. Since MIM raw powder uses D90 powder below 18μm, the surface roughness of the sintered blank can reach Ra0.8, facilitating subsequent polishing, electroplating, and other treatments. Therefore, metal powder injection molding can meet the stringent appearance requirements of watches.
