Sintering Technology in Metal Powder Injection Molding

Sintering technology, invented over 1000 years ago, is now used in many industries, from the well-known ceramics industry to powder injection molding.

The sintering process is mainly divided into three stages

Initial stage, intermediate stage, and final stage

After acid degreasing, the preforms injected by the injection machine have most of the binder (POM) removed, but a small amount of high-temperature binder remains to maintain the product's shape. These residual high-temperature binders are removed by a decomposition reaction when heated to 600 degrees in a sintering furnace. This stage is different from acid degreasing and is called the thermal degreasing stage, also known as pre-sintering.

Initial stage: Sintering necks begin to form and grow from the contact points between the metal powder particles in the completely degreased preform.

Intermediate stage: The sintering necks grow, and the gaps between the metal powder particles gradually decrease, forming a pore network connected by grain boundaries.

Final stage: The pores between the particles eventually become closed and independent pores, and the product is formed.

After the sintering stage, the product's volume shrinks significantly due to the greatly reduced gaps between the particles, thus improving its strength. The advantages of powder injection molding are reflected here: because the preform is formed by injecting a uniformly mixed mixture of metal powder and binder at a certain ratio, the composition of each part of the preform is relatively uniform. This ensures that the product can shrink isotropically in all directions during sintering, thus ensuring the product's shape and dimensional accuracy, which is also a characteristic of MIM.

With technological innovation and progress, material processing technology is developing towards high performance, low cost, short process, and near-net shape forming.
